Military & Veterans Services Celebrates Successful 2023 Veterans Week

Virginia Peninsula Community College marked a successful 2023 Veterans Week themed “Honoring Those who Paved the Path.” The Military and Veterans Services team presented a slate of activities last month in recognition of Veterans Day.

The Nov. 6-9 activities allowed all who are veterans and military-affiliated throughout the College to engage with the campus community. Activities included volunteering at the Foodbank of the Virginia Peninsula, an art show, a banquet, and conducting Green Zone Training for College faculty and staff.

Notably, during the volunteering event at the Foodbank, MVS, Financial Aid, Academic Affairs, and Student Veterans of America collaborated to create 844 backpacks, build over 3,000 pounds of pallets, and process approximately 10,000 pounds of produce for local churches.

The Sixth Annual Art Show showcased diverse artworks – paintings, drawings, photographs and more – by veterans, military-affiliated students, and College personnel. Brian Withers, a former art teacher from New York, donated artwork created by his father, an artist who was a U.S. Army corporal in World War II. His artwork includes pieces from his time in the war, wrestling with his demons after separating from the military, and his success after overcoming the struggles. The pieces are currently on display in Military & Veterans Services office located on the Hampton Campus in Wythe Hall, Room 253.

On Nov. 8, author John H. Davis, known for "Combat to College," participated in Tea with Dr. B and the Veterans Banquet, providing inspiration and insight into veterans' challenges.

The Veterans Banquet, attended by 35 students, faculty, and staff veterans, featured a POW/MIA table ceremony, a meal catered by Carrabba’s Italian Grill, and personal stories shared during an open mic session. The week concluded on Nov. 9 with 13 faculty and staff members participating in Green Zone Training to better understand the challenges student veterans face.

David Lannon of MVS, who led efforts, is grateful to all who contributed to the weeklong observance. He wrote:

“A great deal of work went into the success of this year’s 2023 Veteran’s Week ... I want to thank … Dr. Towuanna Porter Brannon (president), the President’s Cabinet, Marc Vernon, Brandie Weaver, Michelle Shonk, Kathy Carbaugh, Emi Onrubia, Ava Macholz, Jonalyn Gore, Ada Badgely, Barbara Mason, Plant Services, Geraldine Mathey, Student Veterans of America, Cater Nation, and Kadisia Archer. Military & Veterans Services continues its commitment to veterans by participating in Wreaths Across America on Saturday, Dec. 16, at the National Cemetery in Hampton.
