Benefit Reminders
++ Students using VA education benefits should submit a certification request upon enrolling each semester.
++ Active duty/reservists/National Guard using tuition assistance (TA) should email va@vpcc.edu to notify us of intentions to use so we can hold classes.
++ Remember to contact Military and Veteran Services if you wish to make schedule changes so we can lift the hold for you to make the change. If making a change on the day of the deadline, you must contact Military and Veteran Services prior to the close of business.
Key Upcoming Dates and Events:
Dec. 1, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., Hampton Roads Veterans Employment Center, 600 Thimble Shoals Blvd, Suite 210, Newport News: Entrepreneurship, Employment, Empowerment and Education. Learn what the HRVEC offers. Talk with a Military and Veteran Services representative about how to use your military benefits at the College.
Dec. 15, noon - 4 p.m. Hampton campus, Wythe Hall, Room 253: Paws for Purple Hearts will have a service dog on hand to help you relax during exam week.
Dec. 17, noon, Hampton National Cemetery: As part of National Wreaths Across America Day, the Military and Veterans Services and Student Veterans of America club will lay wreaths. For those who wish to participate, please email va@vpcc.edu by Dec. 9. The mission of National Wreaths Across America Day is to remember, honor and teach. Wreath-laying ceremonies are performed at Arlington National Cemetery, and more than 3,400 locations throughout the country, at sea and abroad.
November Factoids:
Nov. 10: U.S. Marine Corps birthday. While not a federal holiday, Marines around the world have celebrated the branch's birthday for more than a century. On Nov. 10, 1775, the Continental Congress passed a resolution creating two battalions of Marines. According to the resolution, the Continental Marine Corps sought men who were "good seamen, or so acquainted with maritime affairs as to be able to serve to advantage by sea." Hundreds of men answered the call and mustered under the first commandant, Samuel Nicholas. His first enlistees found their way to Tun Tavern in Philadelphia, and the Marine Corps was born. Nov. 11: Veterans Day. The Treaty of Versailles, signed June 28, 1919, officially ended World War I. However, fighting ceased in World War I when an armistice between the Allied Nations and Germany went into effect seven months prior on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month (11/11/1918). Nov. 11 was known as Armistice Day when it was proclaimed in November 1919 by President Woodrow Wilson with the following words: "To us in America, the reflections of Armistice Day will be filled with solemn pride in the heroism of those who died in the country's service and with gratitude for the victory, both because of the thing from which it has freed us and because of the opportunity it has given America to show her sympathy with peace and justice in the councils of the nations."To this day, on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month, we honor those who have fought in wars and who have served this nation. Thank you to everyone who has served our country and sacrificed to protect our freedoms.
November: Warrior Care Month. In 2008, Secretary of Defense Robert F. Gates announced the creation of programs to address the needs of wounded warriors. Those efforts have resulted in each branch of service offering its own version of help for those sick or injured in the line of duty. (Warrior Care Month (veteran.com)
