Welcome to Military and Veteran Services' Military Corner. This space is designed for you to see what is going on in Military and Veteran Services. You can see upcoming workshops, information about the Student Veterans of America club, and monthly factoids.

Benefit Reminders

  • Students using VA education benefits should submit a certification request upon enrolling each semester.
  • Active duty/reservists/National Guard using tuition assistance (TA) should email va@vpcc.edu to notify us of intentions to use so we can hold classes.
  • Remember to contact Military & Veteran Students if you want to make schedule changes so we can lift the hold for you to make the change. If making a change on the day of the deadline, you must contact Military and Veteran Services before the close of business.

Key Upcoming Dates and Events:

Sept. 22, 8:30 a.m. - 4 p.m.: Virginia Military & Student Veteran Education Summit, College of William & Mary, Sadler Center, 200 Stadium Dr., Williamsburg.

Oct. 3, 11 a.m. - 12 p.m.: Career resources with Hampton Roads Veteran Employment Center - Entrepreneurship, Employment, Empowerment, and Education, Wythe Hall, Room 253.

Oct. 6, 1 -2 p.m.: Understanding your VA educational benefits and financial aid, Wythe Hall, Room 253

Oct. 12, 9 - 10 a.m.: How to file a disability claim with the American Legion, Wythe Hall, library classroom.

Oct. 25, 2 - 3 p.m.: Library resources workshops meet in Wythe Hall, Room 223, then move to the library.

September Factoids:

Sept. 11: Patriot Day. It is an annual observance to remember those who were injured or died during the terrorist attacks in the United States on Sept. 11, 2001. Many Americans refer to Patriot Day as 9/11 or September 11.

Sept. 17: Constitution Day: Also known as Constitution and Citizenship Day. It honors the document that guarantees Americans their essential rights. Since its ratification in 1787, the Constitution of the United States has served as the basis for all U.S. laws.

Sept. 18: Air Force birthday. The most recent branch of the U.S. Military, it also is the largest and most technologically advanced air force in the world. Initially part of the U.S. Army, the U.S. Air Force was formed as a separate branch of the military Sept. 18, 1947, under the National Security Act of the same year.

Sept. 25: Gold Star Mother's Day. It is observed in the United States on the last Sunday of September each year. It is a day for people to recognize and honor those who have lost a child while serving in the United States Armed Forces.
