What is SACSCOC?
SACSCOC is the acronym for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges (founded 1895), whose Commission on Colleges is the accrediting body for Virginia Peninsula Community College. Its accurate, full abbreviation is SACSCOC and they prefer that reference rather than a shortened “SACS.” Approximately 80 institutions undergo review each year by SACSCOC.
How often do we participate in the reaffirmation process?
Institutions may have their accreditation reaffirmed for up to ten years. However, that does not mean accreditation happens only once a decade. We are continually engaged with SACSCOC through ongoing requests for substantive change, program assessments, and planning for institutional effectiveness. Additionally in 2030, we will submit a Fifth Year Interim Report which provides updates on our QEP and other relevant mid-cycle information.
Why do we participate?
We participate in the accreditation process for many reasons. One is that accreditation ensures access to federal student aid (direct loans). Accreditation also gives VPCC the stamp of approval, indicating that our peers have evaluated us thoroughly according to national educational standards. Finally, the self-analysis leading to reaffirmation gives us valuable insight by documenting areas of excellence and highlighting areas needing improvement.
