Virginia Peninsula Community College is teaming up with 757 Card Shows for the Hampton Collectors Expo, a sports card, comic book and collectibles event, on Saturday, Oct. 10.
The show will benefit VPCC athletics. It is scheduled for Kecoughtan Hall on VPCC’s Hampton Campus and is free and open to the public. Hours are 10 a.m.-5 p.m. VIP tickets will be available for purchase, allowing early access at 9 a.m.
“We are really, really excited about the collaboration with the VPCC Educational Foundation, our athletics department as well as 757 Card shows,” said Chris Moore, the College’s athletics director and men’s basketball coach. “One of the things it is going to do is expose our student-athletes to another entity of sports they aren’t always exposed to.”
He also noted the event will reach an audience that isn’t as familiar with community college athletics.
“When you think about sports cards, most times you think about professional teams and those teams that are Division I and not junior college,” he said. “The collaboration is something we can use to bring attention to Virginia Peninsula Community College athletics and the college as a whole.”
His hope is one day one of VPCC’s student-athletes comes back to be a part of this event because they are featured on a sports card.
Fans can expect sports cards of all kinds, as well as Pokémon and gaming cards. Russell Savage, promoter of 757 Card Shows, said numerous former professional athletes with ties to Hampton Roads will be on hand to sign autographs, but he wasn’t at liberty to announce the names yet. He also expects more than 120 vendor tables.
757 Card Shows is a Virginia-based collectibles event series featuring sports cards, trading card games, comics, toys, and autograph guests, with recurring shows at Rivers Casino Portsmouth and the Virginia Beach Fieldhouse.
