Virginia Peninsula Community College is gearing up for the sixth annual STEM Exploration Community Day on Saturday, Nov. 7, at the Hampton Campus.
Presented by the College’s Science, Technology, Engineering & Mathematics division and the Coastal Virginia STEM Hub , the event is free and open to the public. It runs from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Peninsula Workforce Development Center, 600 College Dr. in Hampton.
Themed “Pathways to Your Career,” it will connect students and community members with STEM education and career opportunities across Coastal Virginia.
Attendees can meet representatives from colleges and universities, museums, science centers and local businesses. The day will include a career panel and student poster sessions showcasing STEM experiences across the region. Food trucks will be on site with various menu options for purchase.
“When the community comes to VPCC, we hope they feel better acquainted with the STEM organizations and industries right in their backyard and how VPCC is creating these opportunities for learners of all ages to join the workforce,” said Dr. Elijah Johnson, STEM outreach and grant coordinator at the College.
Kimberly Zahn, interim associate dean of the College’s STEM division, agreed. She said STEM Exploration Community Day drew more than 1,000 attendees last year.
Johnson and Zahn emphasized the family-friendly event is ideal for anyone looking to expand their reach in STEM fields. The annual gathering lets students, families and community members discover opportunities, meet professionals and explore pathways to rewarding careers close to home.
