April Langhorne didn’t choose Virginia Peninsula Community College by chance or accident. The decision came naturally. Her late sister had attended VPCC, introducing Langhorne to the college experience, and she followed her lead.

Today, she’s pursuing an Associate of Applied Science degree in Information Systems Technology and is among five students chosen for Presidential Ambassadors program this year. The 10-month commitment involves participating in campus events, working in various roles, and being mentored by VPCC leaders. Each ambassador also receives a $1,000 incentive.

A Heritage High School graduate, Langhorne is also the proud parent of a VPCC student. She says her daughter, Camerin, was another powerful influence when it came to enrolling.

Just as VPCC was a natural choice, selecting a major was a no-brainer for Langhorne given her affinity for technology and problem-solving. She admits she has been known as the “go-to” person for tech support at various jobs. Langhorne aspires to a career in technology with an eventual information systems director role. She has her five-year plan in motion and it includes earning a master’s degree.

Balancing her studies and a demanding role as an assistant manager, she stays on track with careful time management and planning along with a strong will to succeed. The Newport News resident remains focused on maintaining strong grades and hopes to inspire her fellow nontraditional students.

Motivation comes from the firm foundation laid by her sisters, Sherry, Stacy, and the late Terry, who raised her when their parents passed away. She is grateful for their guidance, encouragement and support.
