The Gondoliers

The Society of the Performing Arts & the Virginia Peninsula Production Company present Gilbert and Sullivan’s “The Gondoliers.”

“The Gondoliers” begins in Venice, where two egalitarian gondoliers, Marco and Giuseppe, have just married Gianetta and Tessa. The Grand Inquisitor reveals that one of them is the lost heir to the throne of Barataria — and was wed in infancy to Casilda, daughter of the impoverished Duke of Plaza-Toro (though she loves the drummer Luiz). Since the two boys were long ago muddled together, no one knows which gondolier is the real king, so the pair sail off to rule Barataria jointly until their old nurse can identify the true one. After much comic confusion over which wife might be queen and whether one groom is now an accidental bigamist, the nurse reveals that neither gondolier is royal: the actual king is Luiz, who takes the throne and marries Casilda, leaving Marco and Giuseppe to return happily to Venice.

The show will run from July 23-26 and will be at the Dr. Mary T. Christian Theatre on the Hampton Campus of Virginia Peninsula Community College.
