The Testing Center has offices at the Hampton, Historic Triangle Campuses and PWDC.

Services:

Student Scheduling:

Navigate academic appointments are scheduled online at or calling the Testing Center.  When scheduling, Academic Exams must start at least one hour prior to the Center closing. ***The Placement Test must start at least two hours prior to the center closing. *** Once scheduled, learners must inform their instructors of appointment details (i.e. date and time) 5 business days in advance of test date.

Faculty Scheduling:

Please complete the Faculty Testing Submission Form at least two business days prior to your desired test date.  Additional details can be sent to testing@vpcc.edu .

Check In:

Please prepare by bringing the following:

  • Bring a valid photo ID
  • Professor and Course name
  • Login and password

Personal Belongings are required to be stored in lockers and cubicles. Space is limited.

Accommodation Testing:

Learners should confirm any specific details to be provided during exams (makeup, accommodations, academic) with their professor(s) prior to scheduling the testing appointment. 

Testing Space Option:

Learners that need a quiet environment or reliable internet access for testing may also use the Testing Center based on availability. Best to contact the Testing Center in advance.

*Academic Exams are scheduled by appointment preferable through Navigate.  Appointments can also be scheduled by calling the Testing Center.

**Walk ins (excluding non-credential exams) are proctored for academic exams case by case.

***Placement exams may need to be scheduled for an additional day if not completed by center closing.

Do you need to take the Placement Test?

Students may be waived from the placement test for a variety reasons including:

  • An earned associate’s degree or higher
  • A grade of “C” or better in college-level math and/or English courses at a regionally accredited institution
  • Students who have successfully completed developmental math and/or English (within 5 years) courses at a VCCS institution may be exempt from placement testing
  • Students who have successfully completed developmental math and/or English (within 5 years) at a non-VCCS institution can be evaluated for placement
  • Satisfactory Standardized Test Scores
    • Advance Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), College Level Advancement Placement (CLEP), Cambridge International Exams, and Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Educational Support (DSST/DANTES) as determined by the College’s Advanced Standing Guide
    • High School GPA (with appropriate courses) and SAT, ACT, or GED Scores (Valid for 5 years after the date of high school graduation or the date of the test):

What to Bring?

  • High School or GED Transcripts
    • You may bring unofficial or official transcripts for waiver purposes. Official transcripts are required, if you intend to pursue the Nursing or Dental Hygiene programs.
  • College Transcripts
    • You may bring unofficial or official transcripts for waiver purposes. Official transcripts are required, if you intend to pursue the Nursing program.
  • Standardized Test Scores (SAT, ACT, AP, CLEP, IB, DSST/DANTES, Cambridge)

More details:

  • Virginia Placement Test scores are valid for 5 years after the date of the test.
  • Previously completed developmental courses are valid for 5 years after the term completed.
  • Students who take the Virginia Placement Test and do not enroll in developmental math and/or English courses are allowed one retest within 12 months.
  • Students must meet the prerequisites for the respective courses in their chosen program of study.
  • Students seeking to place into higher level math courses may complete the Virginia Placement Test for placement into those courses.

Virginia Placement Test – Practice Test Instructions
  1. Go to the link below and complete the required information.
  2. At the login, click Student Self Registration
    • Enter the following on the Student Registration Page:
    • Institution: Click on the drop down arrow by Institution and select Virginia Peninsula Community College
    • Site: Select VCCS Practice Test
    • Site Password: GatorPractice
  3. Complete the rest of the Student Registration Form.
  4. Click Submit. An account will be created with your entered information & email as your username. You may exit the site and log-in at a later time using this account username & password, if needed.
  5. You will see five practice test links; select the appropriate test for your needs. You may only take each test one time. You may suspend the test and complete it at a later time if you wish.

    • VPT-Math Practice Exam 2
    • VPT-Math Practice Calculus without Trigonometry
    • VPT-Math Practice Calculus with Trig: Addresses Calculus content with Trigonometry
    • Note: The VPT-English Practice Exam does not contain an essay, but please keep in mind you will be required to write an essay when taking the actual VPT-English Assessment.
  6. Click on the blue test name link after completing the practice test in order to view the score report. You may need to click “Print View” to save or print a copy for your college.
  7. Your test results will take the form of a bar graph. Any bar 60 percent or better means you would pass that Unit/Skill on the actual placement test.

Alternative Placement Methods

Alternative methods have been created to help you determine placement in English and mathematics classes.

  1. Multiple Measures

Multiple Measures for Placement help determine readiness for college-level math and English. Eligibility includes:

  • An earned associate’s degree or higher
  • A grade of “C” or better in college-level math and/or English courses at a regionally accredited institution
  • Students who have successfully completed developmental math and/or English (within 5 years) courses at a VCCS institution may be exempt from placement testing
  • Students who have successfully completed developmental math and/or English (within 5 years) at a non-VCCS institution can be evaluated for placement
  • Satisfactory Standardized Test Scores
    • Advance Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), College Level Advancement Placement (CLEP), Cambridge International Exams, and Defense Activity for Non-Traditional Educational Support (DSST/DANTES) as determined by the College’s Advanced Standing Guide
