Academic Advising at Virginia Peninsula
Advising: Plan Now. Succeed Now.
Quality Enhancement Plan (QEP)
A QEP is a course of action for institutional improvement that addresses one or more issues contributing to quality enhancement of student learning. SACSCOC notes in their Handbook for Reaffirmation of Accreditation that "student learning is at the heart of the mission of all institutions of higher learning. Developing a QEP as a part of the reaffirmation process is an opportunity and an impetus for the institution to enhance overall institutional quality and effectiveness by focusing on an issue or issues the institution considers important to improving student learning" (2004: 21). The QEP must emerge from the institution's current planning and evaluation processes and must be compatible with college's strategic plan. The QEP should become an integral part of the institution and its activities for long-term positive impact. For more information on QEPs, see the SACSCOC Handbook for Reaffirmation of Accreditation.
QEP Topic Selection and Development
In October, 2013, a Quality Enhancement Plan survey was sent to all faculty and staff at Virginia Peninsula to gather broad-based input from our campus community regarding a QEP topic that would impact student learning. The QEP Topic Selection Committee then reviewed the topics submitted, and will then take the topics out to the Virginia Peninsula community via faculty and student focus groups to educate the campuses about the QEP and solicit topic ideas. After emerging themes are developed, data from Institutional Research and Effectiveness will be utilized to determine the topic that will provide the most impact on student learning at Virginia Peninsula. The topics will then be taken to the College Stakeholder groups and Strategic Planning for decision, and the QEP topic will be announced to the Virginia Peninsula community in March, 2014.
