  • Accurately and with attentiveness follows departmental general orders and directives.
  • Operates vehicles in a safe manner, in accordance with department policy.
  • Operates radios and other communications equipment in a clear, intelligible, concise, and professional manner using appropriate nomenclature, in accordance with department policies and procedures, and federal regulations.
  • Patrols and/or inspects assigned areas, campus, site, buildings, safety/security systems/equipment, parking lots, streets, and roadways immediate adjacent to college owned/controlled property, buildings, and open spaces on and around the college grounds.
  • Provides crowd and/or traffic control through direction and/or closure or outdoor areas, facilities, sidewalks, parking lots, and/or public/private roadways.
  • Verifies identification of, and monitors faculty, staff, student, contractor, and/or guest when on college owned and/or controlled property.
  • Ensures that safety and/or security issues are reviewed and reported to assure a safe and healthy workplace.
  • Maintains a highly visible public presence in promotion of a safe campus atmosphere, conducive to working, learning, and/or visiting.
  • Secures areas and/or facilities in the event of fire or similar hazardous condition and ensures that all persons have followed the issued protective actions.
  • Fights small, incipient stage fires using a fire extinguisher in accordance with training.
  • Maintains and utilizes issued equipment and college property in the prescribed manner, with its safety, security and consistency of use being the priority.
  • Performs CPR, deploys AED, and/or renders assistance to choking victims.
  • May offer basic first aid for medical emergencies, as necessary and/or appropriate.

  • Enforces the laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia, and local, and the rules and regulations of Virginia Peninsula Community College in a manner, which exhibits excellent public contact and customer service skills.
  • Issues summonses, citations, detention orders, and/or effects arrests of individuals as determined necessary and/or appropriate in a professional and/or courteous manner, and with due regard for officer, subject, and/or bystander safety.
  • Transports persons to the appropriate facility(s) as dictated by the situation, event, and/or incident in accordance with the law and/or judicial orders.
  • Provides accurate and truthful testimony when called upon to do so i.e., magistrate, court, deposition, etc.
  • Responds to investigate incidents and/or alarms, and resets alarms, as requested and/or required in a timely and professional manner.
  • Respond to emergency and non-emergency calls for service and determines appropriate actions.
  • Locks and unlocks buildings and interior spaces as assigned and necessary.
  • Secures and/or escorts college funds to financial institutions, as necessary and/or appropriate.

  • Generates accurate and detailed reports for violations of federal, state, local laws and ordinances, college policies, procedures, rules and/or regulations.
  • Interviews complainants, witnesses, and suspects and obtains complete written statements for reports.
  • Provides details of incidents to the Department Director and/or Chief of Police.
  • Communicates with the Department Director, Chief of Police, Security Officers, Communications Officers, Police Officers, and/or College Administration keeping them apprised of incidents and potential problems in accordance with department policy.
  • Reports maintenance deficiencies to Facilities Management, (i.e.: campus lighting, cleanliness, mechanical failures related to locks, doors and windows), in accordance with department policy.
  • May be required to check, inspect, and report campus/site conditions before, during, and/or following inclement weather, and/or other adverse or hazardous conditions.
  • In the event of emergency may assist other departments to ensure safe and timely reopening of the campus.

  • Endeavors to ensure the protection of life and property.
  • Cooperates with federal, state, local, and/or college authorities/agencies, in carrying out and enforcing regulations, laws, ordinances, policies, procedures, standards, codes of conduct, rules and regulations of the college.

  • Maintains uniform, equipment and vehicles in serviceable condition, establishing and upholding the department’s image of service professionalism (attitude, appearance, and actions) in accordance with department policy.
