The purpose of this scholarship is to provide financial support for a VPCC student that is majoring in a STEM-based program. I, Dr. Karyn Mitchell Ward, want to honor the memory of my father, Mr. Walter Mitchell, through this scholarship. Mr. Mitchell believed that education was most important and the true "equalizer" for all people. He was a philanthropist that helped people, especially in the area of education. Mr. Mitchell was a 1967 graduate of Huntington High School in Newport News, VA and served in the U.S. Navy for six years. He received an Associate Degree in Applied Science from Virginia Peninsula Community College in 1979. Mr. Mitchell was a life-long learner and received numerous certificates and endorsements during his employment with Philip Morris USA, where he retired after over 25 years of service as a shift manager. He loved sports and was a loyal Pittsburgh Steelers fan. He was a loving, compassionate, giving, and kind man of great integrity. His family, co-workers, and circle of friends benefited from his wit and his wisdom.
