How to Report a Crime or Obtain Emergency Assistance

All crimes and suspicious activities should be reported to the police department immediately or as soon as reasonably possible. The report can be made in person, by telephone or by utilizing an emergency call box. Upon receipt of the information, a police officer or a dispatcher will guide you through the process. Campus Police Headquarters is located in Diggs Hall, Room 153. The telephone number is (757) 825-2732. You can also reach an officer via cellular telephone after 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday and on weekends and holidays by calling (757) 879-3649. When reporting a crime you will be asked to give the following information if possible:

  • The location of the incident.
  • What occurred or you observed occur.
  • Date and time of occurrence.
  • Description of suspect.
  • Suspect’s mode and direction of travel.

Remember, you do not have to give your name to report a crime. If you are the victim of a crime, you do not have to press charges. It is your decision to press charges, providing the criminal act is not a crime against the state.
